The principle or character of fame, normally, is to cherish and give recognition to the one who seeks it; he, by tendency, desires to be praised and cheered. The point in question is that its reward is material.
To be clear, there is a "steward" of riches and applause on earth, and he gives them to the one who accepts to worship him. In the spiritual walk, glory and honor are for the one who is greater than riches, praises and all that exists, visible or invisible; and his reward is eternal, not temporal.
John 7:18 NKJV

Colossians 3:23-24
23 And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, 24 knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ.
