The simple definition of temperance is: self-control.
To do or proceed according to one's own thought and judgment, contradicting the divine designs, would be the opposite; but this, in reality, goes beyond a simple meaning and its subsequent contradiction. If you truly love God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your strength, you will always try, on the basis of this love, not to contradict Him.
To have the possibility and the facility, without human opposition, to go against the divine dispositions and not to do so, because you honored the name and the dignity of your Creator in your mind, so as not to disobey Him, this is temperance!
Psalm 119:1-5,9-11 NKJV
א ALEPH
119 Blessed are the undefiled in the way,
Who walk in the law of the Lord!
2 Blessed are those who keep His testimonies,
Who seek Him with the whole heart!
3 They also do no iniquity;
They walk in His ways.
4 You have commanded us
To keep Your precepts diligently.
5 Oh, that my ways were directed
To keep Your statutes!
ב BETH
9 How can a young man cleanse his way?
By taking heed according to Your word.
10 With my whole heart I have sought You;
Oh, let me not wander from Your commandments!
11 Your word I have hidden in my heart,
That I might not sin against You.
